We opened our convention with a new feature on Friday, October 17th --the NFBI Senior Fair. This event provided a hands-on opportunity to learn about newspapers over the telephone, books on tape, magnification devices, talking computers, accessible voting machines, and more. Members of the NFBI demonstrated alternative techniques to allow those losing sight to live independently. Resources and information about services for seniors losing vision were plentiful.
Other events included readings in the “Braille is Beautiful” seminar, the meeting of the Resolutions Committee, and that great fun event -- the IABS Idol.
The general business session convened on Saturday, October 18th at 9 AM. We featured speakers from the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, the Bureau of Blind Services, the state legislature, and the Library for the Blind. Also, a representative from the National Association of Blind Students and members of our own affiliate spoke. There was a planning meeting for parents of blind children. We also had a recreation panel talking about activities for the blind in such areas as scuba diving, skiing, and skydiving. The evening featured our convention banquet at 7 PM. This event included scholarship presentations and an address by an outstanding national representative.
The convention adjourned at approximately noon on Sunday, October 19th. Morning activities included the president’s report, the treasurer’s report, voting on resolutions, and election of officers.
We also hosted a breakfast for students at 7:00 AM on Saturday. Election of officers for IABS took take place at that event. A Spouses and Significant Others breakfast was held on Sunday morning at 8:00 AM.
We hosted a luncheon for all interested in young adult issues on Saturday at 12:00. This luncheon was for those who are young and those who wish to cultivate the involvement of our young people in our affiliate.
Federation conventions change the lives of blind and sighted people alike. Come and be a part of it all!
